Rogate-on-Sands is a seaside town whose population consists mainly of the retired and whose economy is heavily reliant on the annual influx of summer visitors. The small local police force copes efficiently with the petty crime which comes its way. Sunday, July 7th, drastically alters that situation.
The day dawns hazily, holding the promise of sunshine and soaring temperatures but within an hour a police constable has been murdered and a siege has developed, a situation which threatens to get out of hand. Then, with the small force already at full stretch, there is a rash of arson attacks in the town.
