As part of Love Audio Week we've asked some of our team here at W.F.Howes HQ to tell us what they love about audiobooks, and what they enjoy most about working in the industry.
Lewis Hampson is our Sound Engineer who records narrators at our in-house recording studio.
Why do you like audio as a format?
Audiobooks provide the listener with an opportunity to experience literature in a new way. Even if you have read a book before, the chance to hear it brought to life by an actor can bring a fresh perspective to the story. They’re also great to take with you in the car, on your MP3 player on your daily commute.
What do you do in a typical day?
A typical day involves producing actors who are reading the latest book we have at the studio, or editing audio, ready for publication. I really enjoy these roles as I have the opportunity to hear first-hand the brilliant job our actors do, and I can help shape the ebb and flow of the performance whilst recording and editing. The result of which, leads to a better listening experience for the people who buy and download our audiobooks.
What do you love about working in audio?
I have worked with audio in some way, shape or form for well over a decade and my love for the medium hasn’t diminished. Audio often plays more of a backseat role in media like TV and Film, as the visual experience is usually the most immediately impacting aspect. Audiobooks allow sound to take centre stage; people have the chance to appreciate the work of narrators, who do such a great job, without distraction. Being a part of this is something I really enjoy and take great pride in.
