Normal People is the critics' book of the year for 2018

Sally Rooney's Normal People has been crowned the 2018 book of the year, receiving eight nods across the annual end-of-year reviews round-up. Rooney's second novel has garnered several accolades this year including a Man Booker longlisting, a Costa Novel of the Year shortlisting and was named the Waterstones Book of the Year.

Normal People is a girl-meets-boy story with a difference, interrogating the difficulties of sincere communication in a complicated, post-ironic world. James Marriott in the Times compared Rooney to Jane Austen, due to "her genius for capturing people with all their self-conceits and occasional virtues".
