CERP User Guide
Clipper Emergent Reader Programme (CERP) is designed to attract new people to the pleasures of reading and libraries and increase literacy skills in the community.
Through consultation and experience with libraries across the UK, we have compiled a set of recommended actions to ensure CERP packs have the maximum impact for your library and its users.
- Where to locate CERP packs in your library.
- How to reach new and emergent readers.
- How to optimise use in your library.
Location, Location, Location...
- Place the CERP packs with other RAW materials, and alongside printed books.
- In addition, or if your library does not have a RAW display, place CERP packs in the Basic Skills/Skills for Life/Life Long Learning areas of your library.
- Face-on display will also help significantly raise awareness.
Reaching New Readers...
- Make contact with skills tutors in local colleges and inform them about the product and yourstock range in the library.
- Contact local dyslexia associations and inform them of the CERP packs and the literacy benefits they offer.
- Prisons and Young Offender institutes would be interested to know this material is available from libraries.
- Most local associations and colleges have details listed on the internet – a simple Google search may highlight many new and potential groups to work with in the community.
Once In Your Library...
- Circulate this document to reader development officers in your library.
- Staff awareness and understanding of CERP is important so that potential users are directed towards the product and given support and help where required.
- Promote to people with English as a second or other language (ESOL) – CERP packs have proven to be particularly successful in this area.
- Create Reader Groups for people who use the CERP packs.
- If you have specific or large promotions W. F. Howes can work with you and provide materials or information.
These are just some of the measures which can help CERP succeed in your library. We are always glad to hear new suggestions and ideas. Please contact us if you need any further information.
