Library Experiences
The following are examples of how libraries across the UK are finding success with the Clipper Emergent Reader Programme:
"Last Friday I toured members of the Somerset Dyslexia Association around Taunton Library, showing the range of AV, graphic novels, skills for life material and the Quick Read titles.
They were particularly impressed with the Clipper format of book and recorded version together, as they felt that this was best suited to their needs. None appeared aware of these prior to the visit.
Hopefully with a number of other skills for life sessions planned with various agencies we will be able to stimulate good use for these sets..."
- Julian Luke, Somerset Libraries
"The audio packs have gone into the book boxes that are delivered to seven literacy groups each term - these boxes are used by students each week, to choose reading or audio to take home and use, or to use in class.
The packs have been used within our reading for pleasure module run with literacy students, to enable all students to take part in the reading group, whether they have problems with dyslexia, English as a second language or simply have lower level reading skills.
The packs are being borrowed in libraries by a wide range of people, but at the central library I have noticed them being borrowed by Polish and Russian customers, as part of them improving their language skills.
We think the packs are really good, and at least one tutor has said that they are an excellent way of introducing students to the skill of listening to a story, and developing concentration skills, so they have added benefits..."
- Fiona Marriott, Luton Libraries
"I have promoted the audio packs to adult literacy classes and both tutors and students have been very impressed.
Some students are reluctant to take a book home, they don't have much self-confidence that they could actually read a whole book even if it is a short Quick Read, but when shown the audio packs and find out they can listen to a story as well as reading it, they are much keener to take one home and have enjoyed the stories."
- Carole, Essex Libraries
"They've been very useful to work with classes where levels are varied: great for including the less able. Good for starting a group discussion. They are very popular with ESOL too"
- Nicole, Essex Libraries
User Experiences
These are just some of the many comments received from library users who have enjoyed CERP titles:
"Using audio tapes and CDs while I am reading a book has really helped my reading. I can understand the story and I don't have to miss out words that I can't read. I often recognise a new word if it is used again and then I remember it because I have seen it and heard it. I don't need to guess..."
"I still find reading difficult but the story tapes and CDs have improved my skills..."
"My vocabulary has really improved. I enjoy using new words and I can help my children with their school work..."
"I really enjoy audio tapes. I can't read properly yet but I can enjoy the story and picture everything in my mind..."
"Quick Reads have brought me back into reading..."
"Listening has helped me pick out the key words in a piece of text..."
"I feel more confident about my reading..."
