Clipper Emergent Reader Programme
The Clipper Emergent Reader Programme was developed in 2004 in response to demand from libraries for material tailored for the adult literacy market. The Programme has been hugely successful and is now widely regarded as a vital tool in the effort to help reluctant or hesitant readers discover the world of reading.
The Programme enables libraries to build an exciting collection of audio literacy packs from high-profile authors, which fulfils the twin aims of reader development and social inclusion.
How It Works
Each Clipper Emergent Reader Programme Audio Pack, comprises a copy of the printed book and an unabridged recording of the book on both cassette and CD. The user is able to follow the printed text whilst listening to the recording, allowing them to become familiar with any unusual words or phrases as well as developing an understanding of the rhythm of reading. Their literacy skills and reading pleasure are greatly enhanced.
Packaging and Presentation
During development it became apparent that any literacy aid must be widely available and not stigmatise the user. Our Audio Packs are packaged in the same way as our regular audio book titles, with no reference to 'adult literacy', reading difficulties or any indication of 'course' or 'level'.
Target Audience
Anyone who feels they would like to improve their literacy skills will benefit enormously from the Programme, including ESOL readers. Research has shown that the audio/text combination produces an immediate and lasting improvement in the understanding and appreciation of the written word.
Reader Literacy Development
- 26 Million people do not consider reading for pleasure or using libraries regularly.
- 12 Million people of working age have literacy skills below the level expected of a 13-year old.
- 5 Million have literacy skills below the level expected of an 11-year old.
These estimates, suggested by recent research, underpin the need for high quality, accessible titles to attract adult emergent readers and fire their enthusiasm for reading. In consultation with libraries and The National Literacy Trust and The Vital Link, we have developed the Clipper Emergent Reader Programme to offer a list of great titles perfectly tailored for the adult literacy market.
