Synopsis

Orphan Susan Trinder has been raised by Mrs Sucksby in her grimy South London house full of 'fingersmiths' (pickpockets) and a motley assortment of other petty criminals. When handsome con man Richard Rivers arrives, Susan is immediately attracted to him and his elaborate plan to defraud wealthy heiress Maud Lilly. She is installed in Maud's country house as her maid and instructed by Rivers to insinuate herself into her mistress's confidence. The plan appears to be foolproof, until Susan discovers that Maud is a virtual prisoner in her own home, under the iron rule of her eccentric Uncle Christopher.
